Legislation to protect our children & families from sexual predators

Summary

The importance of passing legislation aimed at protecting our children and families from sexual predators. This legislation would allow the public to know where convicted sex offenders are living and allow local governments to set reasonable restrictions as to where convicted sex offenders can reside.

In February of 2015, the NY State Court of Appeals made a ruling that wiped out all of the local laws and restrictions regarding where convicted sex offenders can live, which has resulted in some real horror stories for many communities. The only restriction in place now is on the state level and all it does is prohibits a level 2 or 3 offender who is on probation, from residing within 1000 feet of a school. That’s it…that’s the ONLY restriction. Quite frankly that is not nearly adequate enough to protect our children and families. We need to pass state legislation that will allow the local lawmakers to once again put in place reasonable restrictions that they feel are necessary. We live in an extremely large and diverse state, consisting of 62 very different counties, so to think that one-size-fits-all state restrictions are enough is absurd.   There is legislation in both the NYS Senate and NYS Assembly that would restore the ability for local lawmakers to set reasonable restrictions on where convicted sex offenders may reside. Please join me in calling for the leadership in the Assembly to allow this legislation to move through committees and get to the floor for a vote. Currently, the Assembly bill (A-8503), which I am proud to sponsor, was put on hold (essentially killing it) in the Corrections committee, while the Senate bill (S-6066), sponsored by Senator Michael Venditto (R- Massapequa), passed overwhelmingly with bi-partisan support in the Senate. The bottom line is… this is an issue that can’t wait!! Our children and our families are counting on us to protect them.
